Examining the Background of General John J. Pershing, Namesake of Pershing Park
There is a park, often seen from DC guided tours, that has been dedicated to one of the United States’ most memorable heroes: General John J. Pershing. This war hero influenced many battles and events. This earned him an honor bestowed only on President George Washington; he was named a 6-star general.
Pershing grew up a humble man, supporting his family at 15 years old. He tested to enter West Point Military Academy, where he graduated in 1886. Over the years, Pershing mentored future leaders. At the end of WWI, Pershing was named General of the Armies. He died in 1948 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
